The short answer? With Zentveld’s coffee farm being located in the cooler sub-tropics, our cooler climate means we don’t have the pests or diseases that are prevalent in most coffee growing lands.

This allows our coffee plants to be left alone, spray free and happy, and therefore they only produce their natural amount of caffeine as they grow 🙂

Rebecca Zentveld shares below more on why our Australian grown coffee is naturally lower in caffeine. Coffee that works without the hurt! READ MORE

Aaaah, the stimulating effect of caffeine. We do love it and seek it every day. Addicted? Well yes we are, Aren’t you?

Alas some of us can’t deal with caffeine as much as we’d like to –  or maybe not as much as we used to.

But we still absolutely love to drink coffee.

What if the dosage of caffeine per cup was naturally less .. such that we could enjoy an extra cup for the taste, without the extra stimulation. Now we are talking!

As we are all our unique selves, some lucky ones can take caffeine all day, into the night without ill effect. Others feel overly stimulated and can’t sleep after 2 cups. No fun there. Some rather undesirable side effects of too much caffeine include raised cortisol levels linked with raised anxiety; jitters, stomach cramps, high blood pressure, delayed sleep and insomnia. Sigh.

As coffee lovers, we at Zentveld’s Coffee take our coffee seriously. Like you, we love to drink coffee. We love the taste, body and mouthfeel, along with the alluring aroma. We welcome the stimulating benefits of the first cup or 2, but maybe not so the caffeine effects of further cups of the day.

Hmm, what to do.

What if we tell you that it is possible to enjoy that extra cup of the day, without switching to decaf.  Lower caffeine coffee is here, growing quite naturally in the Byron Bay hinterland, Gold Coast hinterland and Noosa – SE QLD hinterland. Subtropical Australian grown coffee to the rescue!

With Zentveld’s farm location being in the cooler sub-tropics, our naturally cooler climate means we don’t have the pests or diseases that are prevalent in most coffee growing lands. Our cooler climate enables the coffee plants to naturally produce less caffeine.

CAFFEINE CONTENT –  depends on where it is grown, the conditions, and the varietals.

Globally, coffee production is in the true tropics, with hotter climates bringing more pests and diseases. Coffee plants produce caffeine as a natural defence mechanism. The plants produce more caffeine in hotter climates, and naturally less in our cooler, pest free environment. How cool is that! Further, Arabica coffee varietals produce naturally less caffeine than the Robusta varietals. Robusta coffees are known for their caffeine hit, (and are evident in most instant coffees, and ‘traditional’ strong espresso blends) with on average double the caffeine content than quality arabica coffees. Our (so few) Australian coffee farms grow 100% Arabica coffee varietals. No Robusta grown at all. A few years ago, Southern Cross University decided to test the caffeine content of current Australian growers, compared to foreign grown coffees. A strong cross section of Australian estates were tested, with 30 samples of Australian estate beans tested alongside 30 samples of comparitive, high quality beans from other lands. So like, with like. Results showed the Australian estate arabica coffees were consistently 28-30% lower in caffeine levels than the foreign beans. Want that third cup a day? Australian coffee is the bean for you.

Our cool for coffee environment ensures a comparatively longer, slower ripening period for the coffee fruit. A full 10- 11 months development  of the fruit brings sweetness and rich flavour to the coffee bean within. Agronomists suggest our uniquely cool microclimate, well south of the equator,  provide conditions as if we were positioned at much high altitudes of around 1800m, rather than the 150m above sea level that we are, here at Newrybar.

In the tropic countries the cooler conditions and likely richer soil is found up in the highlands. It’s the ‘coolness’ and microclimate and richer soils that that add to the flavour development – that’s what the ‘altitude’ delivers. The microclimate and conditions up at high altitude in hot tropic zones helps deliver higher quality coffee.  We Australian estates have lower altitude but significantly lower latitude – positioned way south of the equatorial zone. So… we are naturally cooler, even though we are not up in the mountains. “What we lack in altitude, we make for in latitude”  to quote our local Coffee Agronomist, David Peasley.

Coffee trees pump out caffeine as a defence mechanism – and our plants just don’t have to defend themselves of ’the bad guys’ prevalent in other coffee lands. They are living the good life here in the Byron hinterland, don’t we know it.

It is more complicated than that ..  Lower caffeine level is also linked with higher quality coffee. Win win. Our regional coffees in Australia have all been tested for caffeine levels over 30 years now, and regularly show up to 30% lower caffeine level than comparable ‘quality, high grown arabica coffees’ of fine regions around the world.

We really love the natural benefits of our cooler climate and sweet, rich flavour development brought out of a longer, slower ripening season. Our Coffee has a lovely life in the hills behind Byron Bay, under less stress of hotter climes. Truly, Cool Climate, Chilled Coffee.

With hand on heart and true devotion to morning coffees, I declare our Z Estate coffee ‘works’ without the hurt. Enough caffeine to be stimulating but not so much that you get the jitters after 2 cups. People say they can drink 2 or 3 of our Zentveld’s Estate Coffee without feeling any side effects. Excellent news! Enjoy great taste, with your wellbeing in mind. Coffee produced from healthful coffee plants, grown without stress from pests and disease compared to other coffee lands. Good for us, good for the coffee trees, good for nature, growing coffee naturally pesticide free! How special is that.

We love our Z Estate coffee plants and are pleased to nurture them naturally – without chemical fertilisers, only using organic inputs such as compost, seaweed and fish hydrolysates, along with cover crops and ground covers for diversity, nutrient transfer and soil life. They are truly living the good life in the hills behind Byron Bay. But we aren’t producing nearly enough beans as we think we should, for all the care they get. This might be the right moment to put out a call for more landowners to join us in growing fine arabica coffee in subtropical Australia. If your conditions are right, coffee drinkers need you!

At Zentveld’s, more people are finding us with their own health – and health for the planet in mind. As well seeking good taste, mindful coffee drinkers with a good dose of environmental and social awareness are seeking coffees that are locally grown, produced as naturally as possible, are naturally pesticide free and that by turn, are naturally lower caffeine too.

IMPORTANT: Whilst loving our naturally low caffeine Australian estate coffee, we also offer coffees from around the world. There’s a coffee here for all caffeine drinkers with  BIG BOLDZEN ORGANIC and select single origins that offer full taste as well as ‘fully caffeinated’ coffee experience you may be looking for.
