Pouring Milk for Latte Art
Do you want to make a latte as artfully as your café barista? Follow these simples steps and with some focus and practise… perhaps a lot of practise, you can do it!
Try these tips and achieve latte art in the comfort of your own home.
To start with, you have your heated, steamed milk ready in the jug, and the espresso poured.
The milk is silky smooth, creamy with almost no visual micro bubbles. (Click here on how to texture your milk.)
* This will be harder to achieve with most plant-based milks. Add steam carefully, with the steam wand on an angle and deep in the jug to minimise overly aerated, big bubbles.
Once you are ready to pour:
Mix your milk really well, with steady swirling motion.
Tilt your cup with the espresso inside.
Start to pour the milk in the centre of your espresso, combining the milk with the espresso.
Once you have your cup half full, get your milk jug close to the cup and start to ‘draw’.
Make your hand movements very gentle, slow and steady.
IMPORTANT: Don’t pour the milk too fast or you will struggle to get any design done before you reach the brim.

Wiggling the jug of milk from side to side, then drawing through small dollops of milk, will help create classic ferns or love hearts to start with.
Experiment and have fun creating your design!
Watching latte art videos will be helpful here too as you will get to see how experienced baristas do their moves. It doesn’t need to be too tricky!
